Something I have come to realize about the various phones I own and have used, is that I am happiest with an extremely stable platform. For every phone, I have at least one problem, but only one has not had a truly major problem for me:

  • Firefox OS: Unstable, buggy, unfinished, cannot perform over-the-air OS updates.
  • Windows Phone 8: Over-the-air OS updates rely on the carriers, very weak application marketplace
  • Android: Unstable at best, applications are always of questionable quality, much more difficult to find high-quality applications, many applications are locked to specific phones or brands, and will not run on others, over-the-air updates rely on carriers and handset makers, I do not trust Google.
  • iOS: Only available on one type of device, expensive.

Notice the difference between the first three and iOS? The only problem with iOS is that it is controlled by Apple, who have expensive hardware.

iOS has always been stable for me, with high-quality applications to choose from, and a fairly good web browser (Firefox OS still wins in this regard). It has also always had excellent support for non-Latin languages such as Japanese, which I need while I learn the language (albeit rather slowly).

For me, iOS seems to be the best choice for a mobile platform. I do wish it were slightly cheaper, but I cannot complain about the idea that quality comes at a price, at least on this world.
