I give up on Mastodon
Jun. 10th, 2018 03:55 pmSo... I'll just be short about this.
People on Mastodon have legit complaints about how things are handled. However, many of the toxic users are allowed to remain simply because:
a) they're admins or moderators of instances.
b) they're part of a disenfranchised or minority group that will have the wrath of Mastodon itself on you if you mess with them.
c) they've got enough clout that punishing them will cause major problems for the federation.
And sadly enough, many of the ones making real complaints about problems with the OStatus Fediverse are themselves toxic, or handle their complaints in a toxic and hateful manner.
On top of all of this, Mastodon did manage to replicate Twitter in two ways:
1) The level of toxicity within the greater community there.
2) The sheer amount of noise people post out. Literally, 3/4 of the federated timeline that I could see were shitposts from a small number of people, drowning out everyone else. And I only saw maybe a tenth of the federation as a whole.
Just... As it is, the OStatus Federation is neither a viable alternative to Twitter, nor is it worth your time. You'll have a much easier time curating a positive timeline on Twitter than on any OStatus/ActivityPub server you come across.
Don't bother with Mastodon and crew. I'm not going to anymore. I don't need that level of constant negativity in my life.
