So, seems I'm not the only one leaving Linux. Kev Quirk of FOSStodon recently spoke up about moving back to Windows, Then I noticed Nathan DeGruchy with a blog post involving similar thoughts.

I'll be honest, I think part of the problem isn't just "Windows Just Works". It's that every time someone comes up with a solution in the Linux world to a boatload of problems, others come in to tear down those solutions with their own ideologies, often times in a toxic and hateful manner, then start to fade away while others try to take over. It's why we have Snapd, Flatpak, and AppImage as "solutions" to the "every distro installs things differently" problem, and everyone is either fighting for one of the options, or against all of them. Choice fatigue is a real thing, and Linux offers no end of it.

Meanwhile, on Windows, you have EXE/MSI installers that just work, or zip files for portable versions if you wanna throw the apps onto a thumbdrive or SD card to cart around. Macs have PKG packages, or you drag-and-drop an APP file into the Applications folder, or you install from the Mac App Store, depending on what the developer provides you with. You don't have to worry about having the "right" version, since they all work.

And with that thought, I'll honestly echo what Kev and DeGruchy said: Running desktop Linux is a like a full-time job. And more often than not, maintaining it is enough of a chore that it will run your life. That's not even mentioning my recent hardware compatibility issues.

Just... "Windows works". It doesn't require you to have to constantly think about everything just to get a little work done. And as much as I love Linux, with all of the changes being forced onto users with Systemd, Wayland, Pipewire, and so on, and constant breakage of hardware support, I just don't have the mental energy to keep up anymore. It's draining, in an unhealthy way.

Windows 10 isn't much better. Nor is modern MacOS. But then again, modern OSes seem to just suck in general.
