Workflow Disruptions

starseerdrgnSo... I'm sitting here on my MacBook, watching my desktop installing updates, still slightly annoyed by my situation. Mac Pro's GPU is on its last legs, so I had to pull out my Dell XPS 410.
Office 2007 (because f**k flat UI design), Visual Studio 2010, Winamp, Notepad3, Notepad++, SeaMonkey, Photoshop CS2, Inform 7, Quest, MS Expression Web and Design, KeePassXC, Mumble, Calibre, ClamWin, Gargoyle (Inform Engine), Brevvy, HexChat, Pidgin, Scrivener... Applications that can make Windows somewhat usable for me after being a Mac user for so long.
But... Why my Dell XPS? Windows Vista. I much prefer it over 7, mostly for the UI, and partly because it doesn't have the tacked-on Ribbon UI bullshit that 7 got pushed onto it. I like the RibbonUI for Office, but that's really it. And Vista runs the few games I still like playing, where as 7 often has issues with some of them, even with Compatibility Mode turned on. At least Spiral Knights and Minecraft will be simple.
Given that I only have room for using one system at my desk—the entire reason I got the Mac Pro in the first place—I can't really use both my iMac and my Dell to take its place. So I had to choose one, and the Dell was that choice.
Besides, it's nice to shake things up a bit at times. Remind myself that Macs aren't the only thing out there. And I won't use Linux because it's hard enough getting a working distro these days, much one in less that a few hours. Maybe later on, when I have another drive hooked up that I can dedicate to a distro.
Still, my workflow is going to take some re-tuning, given how much I rely on many Mac-only tools like TextExpander, and the superior Mac version of Scrivener (it seriously does have better features, given the devs are Mac fans). Lack of compose keys are going to be the worst part, though.
And before anyone says "Windows 10", no thanks. I lost enough hours of work dealing with the broken-ass update system on that sorry puddle of frustration across three different systems, including a Surface Pro 3 that required a full OS reinstall after every update just to keep it from chugging. That wasn't a happy time. It's what got me to move to Macs in the first place.
